Americans Spent Over $12 Billion on Aesthetic Procedures in 2014: ASAPS Report
Millions of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures are performed every year in the US. Improvements in technology have led to reduced risk, lower costs, and enhanced aesthetic outcomes. The number of people seeking plastic surgery as well as med spa procedures continues to grow year on year.

Growing Demand for Cosmetic Procedures
According to the 18th annual multi-specialty data report released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), American men and women spent more than $12 billion on surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures for the second year in a row.
One of the interesting insights revealed in the figures is that an increasing number of men are opting for aesthetic procedures in the country with each passing year. Over the last five years, the number of men choosing surgical or non-surgical procedures has shot up by a dramatic 43%.
On a year on year basis, the procedures that have demonstrated the biggest growth in volume include buttock augmentation, which is up 86%, labiaplasty, up 49%, and non-surgical fat reduction procedures, which have risen by 42%.
Top Five Surgical Procedures
For both men and women combined, the top five surgical aesthetic procedures in 2014 were as follows:
- Liposuction (342,494 procedures)
- Breast Augmentation (286,694 procedures)
- Eyelid Surgery (165,714 procedures)
- Tummy Tuck (164,021 procedures)
- Nose Surgery (145,909 procedures)
Liposuction continues to be the dominant procedure because advancements in surgical techniques have made it less invasive and a more targeted surgery. Breast augmentation is another highly popular procedure because of the advanced qualities available in silicone and saline breast implants, and more efficient implantation techniques.
The incidence of capsular contractures has gone down over the years. Tummy tuck, rhinoplasty and eyelid lift also remain leading cosmetic surgery procedures in the US, year after year.
Top Five Non-surgical Procedures
For both men and women combined, the top five non-surgical procedures in 2014 were as follows:
- Botulinum Toxin (3,588,218 procedures)
- Hyaluronic Acid Based Fillers (1,696,621 procedures)
- Hair Removal (828,480 procedures)
- Chemical Peel (484,053 procedures)
- Microdermabrasion (417,034 procedures)
With nearly 3.6 million recorded Botulinum Toxin (Botox and Dysport) based injectable anti-aging treatments performed in 2014, this remains by far the most popular non-surgical FDA approved aesthetic treatment. Dermal fillers which are based on hyaluronic acid, such as Juvederm and Restylane, also continue to be procedures in demand, apart from laser hair removal, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion treatments.
Increase in Men’s Procedures
Since 2010, the growth in men’s aesthetic procedures has been recorded by ASAPS as follows:
- Blepharoplasty (up 34%)
- Male Breast Reduction (up 33%)
- Facelift (up 44%)
- Botulinum Toxin (up 84%)
- Hyaluronic Acid Based Fillers (up 94%)
- Nonsurgical skin tightening (up 37%)
- Intense Pulsed Light (up 44%)
The rising trends in favor of both invasive and non-invasive aesthetic treatments are expected to continue in the near future as technologies advance and the procedures become safer and more effective.
